Neuropathy and Foot Care: 5 Tips for Healthy Feet

Neuropathy is the result of damage to nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord. This damage causes painful symptoms like; numbness, burning, tingling, sharp pains, and so much more. While neuropathy can occur anywhere in the body, today I am focusing on how to maintain healthy feet while living with neuropathy.

    1. Regular Foot Inspections

One of the most common symptoms of neuropathy is numbness. Having numb feet can make it easy for minor issues to be overlooked - which can escalate into larger health issues over time. Be sure to inspect your feet daily for any cuts, bruises, or signs of infection.

   2. Proper Foot Hygiene

Neuropathy impacts blood flow and circulation, making it more challenging for your body to heal from even minor wounds. By practicing routine and proper foot hygiene you can reduce your risk of developing wounds and catch any infections or wounds early on.

To maintain proper foot hygiene with neuropathy, individuals should:

  • Wash their feet daily with mild soap and warm water.
  • Dry their feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.
  • Apply moisturizer to prevent dry skin.
  • Trim their toenails carefully or seek professional help for nail care.
  • Choose comfortable and well-fitting footwear.
  • Avoid walking barefoot to prevent injuries.
    3. Comfortable Footwear & Appropriate Walking Aids

The most dangerous side effect of neuropathy is difficulty balancing.

Properly fitted shoes can minimize the risk of foot trauma by ensuring minimal friction and pressure on the feet. Walkers are important for neuropathy patients for several reasons, but most importantly, for safety. I strongly recommend that you get training on how to use a walker or cane appropriately from the place you purchased it from or your doctor's office.

    4. Regular Exercise

NOTE: It is important to consult with your primary physician before starting any exercise program, incorporating appropriate physical activity into your routine can have positive effects on neuropathy in many ways.

Exercise can help improve blood flow and circulation, improve balance and stability, and help your overall well-being. If mobility is an issue, check out this guide for tips on exercise that you can do seated.

    5. Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly impact neuropathy symptoms.

  • Ensure you are getting regular and quality sleep.
  • Quality nutrition;  eating whole foods, and minimizing your consumption of inflammatory foods can all help you regulate your blood sugar and minimize some neuropathy symptoms.
  • Regular visits to your primary care physician; track blood sugar levels, blood pressure, early detection of complications.
  • Make health a habit. Read my blog to get tips on how to make being healthy a part of your life.
