What is Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is caused by damages to the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is what is sends messages to and from the spinal cord and brain, to the rest of the body. When the PNS suffers damage, it sends mixed signals to the central nervous system, causing the painful symptoms of neuropathy and disorientating your body - making balancing and walking difficult.

There are over 100 different causes of neuropathy including:

  • Diabetes
  • Chemotherapy & Radiation
  • Trauma Induced
  • Post - surgical
  • Medications
  • Poor Nutrition
  • and so much more....

How does Neuropathy impact balance?

Damage to peripheral nerves can make it challenging for your brain to determine where your feet are, causing difficulty balancing and walking.

Having difficulty with walking, and balancing is one of the most dangerous symptoms of neuropathy.

Statistics show that 1 in 3 adults over the age of 65 experience a fall every year.

20-30% of these falls result in moderate to severe injuries, including bruises, hip fractures, or head traumas…while 10% of these are fatal.

In fact, falling is the leading cause of injury and death among those over the age of 65.
